Dawn of a new age

In the industrial states the public coff ers are empty, but this doesn‘t really stop the growth in the health care market significantly. Demand is growing especially in the emerging markets. Currently about 50 percent of the worldwide produced medical technology products are used in the USA, the markets in Asia, Africa and Latin America are growing with a growth rate of 15 percent per year.

Complete solutions are the future

Reasons for this rate of increase are a growing middle class, which are spending more money on health services, as well as an increased investment in the improvement of their healthcare systems by states like China. In these markets ATMOS is excellently positioned with their complete solutions. Since years, we are expanding our high expertise in innovative suction and drainage technology for the OR and care sector and we focus on complete workplace solutions in the ENT sector and in the gynaecology sector. With about 280 employees in our headquarters in Lenzkirch we develop solutions for the world market, which are not only aff ordable, but also reduce treatment costs by providing the medical professional with optimal operational processes to speed up the treatment.

We are convinced that our innovations belong to the future. For this reason we are developing and selling our own solutions worldwide through our 13 subsidiaries and approx. 70 national representatives. Furthermore we support our business partners in joint ventures with unique special developments in the field of our core competency – medical suction and workflow optimization.

Employees as entrepreneurs

In Germany and worldwide ATMOS employs around 300 people (in 2016) in an innovative sector. In the region and worldwide, we constantly create attractive and desired jobs and training places. ATMOS emplo­yees are highly motivated, team-oriented and inter­nationally thinking “entrepreneurs” with an excellent education who engage in personal training to develop themselves continuously in a business and a personal way. Our internal training programme and the ATMOS Academy is contributing to this.

From Berlin to Lenzkirch

It all began in a pharmacy in Berlin. In 1888 the Kaiser Friedrich pharmacy was founded in Berlin. 30 years later the pharmacy became an oxygen central. The pharmacist’s thoughts went far beyond the production and sale of the drugs. His intentions were in particular to concentrate on the pharmaceutical utilization of air, since air, oxygen and water are the most important factors for human life. Since 1906 various models of inhaling devices and equipment for the implementation of suction and air pressure accounted for the main emphasis of the production line. In 1927 the fi rst so called “suction pressure and hot air device for medical purposes” was produced, the core competence of ATMOS was born. In 1941 the company was given the name ATMOS and moved its headquarters from Berlin to Freiburg im Breisgau in 1942.1944 the Reich patent for a so called pocket inhaler had been granted. With this device it was possible, to inhale medications for throat, nose and bronchial areas, regardless of time or location and without external energy sources.

Growth through concentration

In 1957 TESTOTERM was founded as a sales company of ATMOS. Besides small devices for the ENT sector they concentrated on the development and production of therapy and treatment units. A new technology challenge emerged. Electronic was saturating the market and it was merely a matter of time until it would also make its entrance in pharmaceutical technology. As early as in the late sixties, the management decided to serve additional market segments in the field of throat, nose and ear care. Not merely “small devices” were intended to be manufactured, but entire therapy and treatment units. Thus came the invention of the ATMOS therapy pillar Harzburg. The continued development process and successful market introduction was immediately followed by a new model series: the SERVANT Generation. In a more revised version it is still successfully produced today. 1984 the ATMOS MedizinTechnik GmbH was registered in the Register of Companies as an independent enterprise.

The growing and striving enterprise experienced a tremendous catastrophe in January 1989. A major fire destroyed great parts of the production and storage area. The nearly superhuman performance of the employees saved the still usable material and many machines. After only a few days, production was resumed inside the still intact part of the operation building and in containers.

Innovations ensure the expansion course

In 1985 ATMOS France, the fi rst foreign subsidiary was founded, in 1995 ATMOS Italia followed, in 2001 ATMOS Espania and ATMOS Switzerland and one year later ATMOS Asia in Kuala Lumpur/Malaysia. In 2004 ATMOS USA and ATMOS Russia started their business. Meanwhile a change of control at the top took place: in 1999 the company Testo acquired 75% of the ATMOS company shares and 25% of the ATMOS shares went to the new managing director Peter Greiser.

In 2003 the company launched the world‘s first electronically regulated mobile pleura drainage suction device, the ATMOS® S 031 Thorax. In 2005 the breakthrough in the gynaecology market followed: ATMOS launched the newly developed gynaecological workstation for the diagnosis and therapy of cervical cancer.

New subsidiaries, new markets, new leadership

In 2005 the Greiser family takes over 100% of the ATMOS group. In 2006 the sales companies in UK and Hungary were also turned into subsidiaries. In the same year a representative offi ce was established in China, one year later ATMOS Turkey started their business. In 2008 ATMOS celebrated its 120th anniversary and entered in 2010 in a new era with an enlarged management team and an organizational structure. At the top are now the two sons, the managing directors Frank and Maik Greiser, who now own 2/3 of the shares of the ATMOS group. In 2012 a representative office was established in India. 2011 the ATMOS® S 042 NPWT (Negativ Pressure Wound Therapy) was developed. 2012 ATMOS pushes the first LED-microscope ATMOS® i View into the market. In india the ATMOS (RO) India is created and the ATMOS subsiadiary ATMOS China starts its business as a 100 % subsidiary after three years of preparition.

First quality should be a thought and then it is produced

We are constantly looking for new challenges with the objective of being the top partner for our customers, to contribute to their success with high-quality and innovative solutions. For us quality is a strategic success factor and our integrated quality management system is the expression of this comprehensive understanding of quality.

ATMOS quality built on responsibility

We do not restrict quality on our products, but aim to maximize the company´s quality. This also includes the quality of the environment, we are aware that a conscious handling of the environment is necessary for a long-term success of the company in a world of limited resources and a limited carrying capacity of the ecosystem. Environmental protection and energy efficiency are part of the ATMOS quality management system.

ATMOS quality is market-oriented

The quality of the processes and the products must go hand in hand with the qualification of the employees to secure the business result. This is the only way we can offer secure jobs in the long term. Here we must always keep in mind that in a competitive market the quality objective is speci­fied by our customers. They are right to expect faultless products. Our comprehensive quality understanding, embedded in the guidelines of the ATMOS quality management system, only follows one lodestar: surpass customers expectations.

Our target is the zero-defect-quality

Every error requires corrective measures and costs time and money. Therefore, our focus is on the continuous improvement in every part of our organization with the target of leading ATMOS to a zero-defect-quality and in the long-term to the best in class. Highly motivated employees and the latest technology guarantee proverbial ATMOS quality. The basis is the quality management system in accordance with DIN EN 13485, which guarantees a systematic account of quality beyond the pro­duct life cycle – from the development to the service.

ATMOS is not one of those companies where people at the age of fifty already are considered “unusable” or “no longer placeable”. Quite the contrary, experienced and highly qualified employees are of great importance in our young teams and have an important function within the ATMOS Academy.
